About the Unearthed Program

Can our region be the Silicon Valley of agriculture, health or energy?

$284,000 is being made available to foster a new generation of entrepreneurs in south-west Victoria.

The Victorian Government’s LaunchVic announced the funding today, which will help create a 12-month program across the Warrnambool, Moyne and Corangamite municipalities.

The program will speed up the process of developing and scaling a business idea, sometimes referred to as a “business accelerator”, as well as meetups, intensive workshops, weekly masterclasses and one-on-one mentoring with industry experts.

Warrnambool City Council CEO Bruce Anson said that the initiative was about creating the right conditions for new companies to thrive while encouraging an entrepreneurial culture.

“It’s absolutely clear that this region is flush with creative people with ideas for successful businesses,” he said.

“We are eager to support these talented, creative individuals so that while they may enter global markets, they can remain in the region and contribute to the economic prosperity of the region.

“The most successful start-ups or scale-ups require a combination of creativity and business acumen. Through this 12-month program, participants will be able to develop their idea into a fully market-ready product.

“As we’ve seen with recent placemaking initiatives like Beers and Ideas, if you create the right environment, people will come forward with the most incredible projects.

“I’m looking forward to being surprised and inspired by what the outcomes of this program might be, whether that be a new agritech product or service to help strengthen the region’s dominance in the food and fibre sector, an innovative software application, or something completely out of the blue.”

The Economic Development Units in Warrnambool, Moyne and Corangamite will deliver the program while Runway Geelong will undertake the facilitation and mentoring components. The program is also supported by Deakin University, South West TAFE and the Great South Coast Food and Fibre Council.
